NCDOT hosts talks on deaths on railroad tracks

RALEIGH

The Rail Safety Summit met Thursday and was sponsored by the N.C. Department of Transportation. Officials discussed ways to improve rail safety education and discourage distracted drivers and trespassers on and around railroad tracks.

The summit is the next step in a collaborative effort that began with a Rail Safety Roundtable Secretary Tony Tata led in February with industry leaders.

Amtrak Police Chief Polly Hanson is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

So far this year, 15 people have died on the tracks, compared to 18 fatalities during all of 2012.
