Franklin Jackson knows and bid successfully for several items made by Thomas Day.
Day was a free man of color in the 1800's known as a gifted furniture maker at a time when most other blacks in this state were slaves.
The furniture's part of a collection once owned by United States Senator Bedford Brown, who lived in a Yanceyville Estate.
John Tyson of The Tory Hill Auction Company said," It was on loan to The Smithsonian, and now it's back. The same family has owned the estate for almost 200 years or more."
The winning bidder Sheila Jackson said, " We really respect the artist, and that's what it is. He's a craftsman but it's really art."
The Jacksons will donate a day table to a museum showcasing African-American art and history.
