Officials say the two people fell into the water after some sort of vessel capsized. They were carried downstream around 9 p.m. Monday evening.
It happened near U.S. Highway 1 and the Deep River Bridge near the Lee County line near Moncure.
They were stranded on an island on a large rock in the river until rescuers could reach them.
The woman's husband was nearby during the rescue.
No one was injured.
