Authorities said 30-year-old Brian Long, of Durham, was walking along the shoulder with Kristen McLaughlin when he was struck by a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 22-year-old Elizabeth Ekberg, of Bahama.
It happened around 12:15 p.m.
Long died at the scene. McLaughlin sustained non-life threatening injuries and was not taken to the hospital.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol was investigating. It is unclear whether charges will be filed.
