Oreo on the way to finding a forever home

DURHAM

More than two weeks after being found wandering the streets of Durham County, Oreo is on his way to an equine rescue group that will work to find him a permanent home.

Deputies found Oreo July 22 in a residential neighborhood in east Durham. Oreo was then taken to the Animal Protection Society of Durham where he was held as the Sheriff's Office worked to identify the horse's owner.

An owner eventually came forward, but was reluctant to reclaim Oreo. The owner finally agreed to surrender the horse Aug. 5. Because Oreo's owner surrendered him, the Animal Protection Society of Durham is permitted to seek adoption for the horse.

In the weeks since Oreo was found, many individuals and rescue groups have expressed interest in adopting the horse. Today the Animal Protection Society of Durham announced that Healing Hearts Equine Rescue, of Carthage will be taking Oreo Aug. 14.
