Former Wake County substitute teacher faces sex charges

RALEIGH

The Wake County Sheriff's Office arrested 49-year-old Brian Holt Self, of Black Swan Street in Wake Forest Friday.

Self is charged with three counts of indecent liberties with students at Jones Dairy Elementary School near Wake Forest. One incident allegedly happened July 15 and the other two on July 17.

Self was a substitute teacher, but was listed as unemployed on his arrest warrant. A school district spokesperson told ABC11 Self resigned in late July.

ABC11 has learned detectives have interviewed as many as ten children about the allegations after another teacher reported concerns about Self's behavior.

Parents who spoke with ABC11 Monday said, while they are upset about the allegations, they're grateful to the teacher who sounded the alarm.

"I think that's excellent.  I mean, that teacher did what they should have done and reported it.  I don't think that a teacher should put their hands on a child any, anyway," offered parent Amy Barbour.

Self is being held on $150,000 bond and made a first appearance in a Wake County courtroom on Monday.
