Dr. William Lee Ebenstein, 57, was being held in the Durham County jail on a $600,000 bond.
He's charged with seven counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor and one count of third-degree exploitation of a minor.
Duke said Ebenstein is not a member of the faculty. He's been employed at the school since 1991. He's been placed on leave while the charges are pending - which is standard procedure.
Court documents show that Ebenstein told officials he just lost his job at the university.
The FBI is handling the case and said in a statement, that Duke and law enforcement agencies are cooperating with their investigation.
