Witness: Man shot, killed in Sanford by man wearing sheriff sweatshirt

SANFORD, N.C.

It happened around 5:45 a.m. Friday on Hickory Nut Court in Sanford.

When deputies arrived, they found 45-year-old Anthony Wayne Giles dead from a gunshot wound.

Giles' wife said a black male broke into the residence an announced "sheriff". She also reported the man was carrying an assault type rifle and demanded money.

Giles reported she gave the man what money was in the home and that she was tied up.

The suspect is described as wearing a black hat; a gray colored sweatshirt with "Sheriff Dept." printed on it, and tan cargo pants. His hair was in dread locks pulled into a ponytail.

Authorities are attempting to identify the person in a photo that was taken in the Save More convenience store located at 2800 South Horner Boulevard in Sanford around 6:30 a.m. Friday.

They say the person is not a suspect at this time, but is someone they would like to identify and speak with.
