Authorities said 23-year-old Raycheal Osborhe of Clayton was driving west on US-70 when she lost control of her vehicle, ran off the road and hit a guardrail.
Her car was blocking both lanes of the highway when she got out of the car. Authorities said she was standing next to the driver's side door when a Ford SUV driven by 65-year-old Carlton Overby of Wilsons Mills hit her and her car.
The car was then pushed into the right turn lane for NC-42 where it hit a Honda Accord driven by 36-year-old Mariel Ibar of Pinelevel.
All the westbound lanes of US-70 at Exit 320 were closed for almost three hours as authorities cleared the scene.
Traffic was rerouted around the accident via the median and NC-42.
