Troopers say 21-year-old Austin Cross was driving on N.C. Highway 27 between Coats and Benson when he made a fatal mistake.
They say Cross was leaning over to show his passengers something on a cell phone when he lost control of his truck. Cross then hit a ditch which caused his truck to rollover.
Savanah Maynard, 18, died in the accident.
Cross has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
