Harnett County hostage situation ends with crash

HARNETT COUNTY, N.C.

Officials said the incident began just before 2 a.m. when 22-year-old Bradley Campbell entered a home on Kelly Creek Street he shares with his girlfriend in Spring Lake's Anderson Creek Mobile Home Park and a domestic dispute began.

The girlfriend was able to get out of the house with a 2-month-old child, but a 2-year-old child, a 6-year-old child, and 18-year-old Mark Simon were held hostage in the house.

Authorities started negotiating with Campbell. At some point he allegedly shot Simon three times in the stomach - finally releasing him four hours later.

Then, one by one, Campbell released the children.

"When we got the first one out, I just said 'Thank you, Lord, we're getting there.' When the second one came out, it was 'Thank you, Lord, it's over' because then I knew all I had to deal with then was Bradley Campbell," said Sheriff Larry Rollins.

Just after 10 a.m., Campbell allegedly ran outside and jumped into a car in an escape attempt.

That's when deputies converged and rammed the car.

Campbell was arrested. Simon was in fair condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. The girlfriend and the children are in protective custody. She spoke with ABC11, but asked not to be identified.

"He let all the children out safe because he didn't want to hurt the children at all. It wasn't about the children, it was about problems he had with himself and adults he felt he had issues with, but it had nothing to do with the children at all," said the woman.

Neighbors said the whole ordeal was shocking.

"Pretty scary moment though, heart still pounding. Like I said, it was something out of a movie," said witness Tyrone Bright.

The investigation continues.
