McKee Homes has teamed up with the national non-profit, Helping A Hero, and the Legacy Lakes community to build the home. It will be custom-built to the service man or woman's needs as a result of injuries suffered in war.
During a ceremony Wednesday morning, about half a dozen wounded warrior home recipients shared their stories with the community, encouraging the public to nominate a hero who may otherwise be too proud or hesitant to ask for help. Among the servicemen featured were amputees, burn victims and those suffering from a traumatic brain injury, better known as TBI.
"You look around, you see some of these younger veterans in wheelchairs. We have triple amputees that are getting home. How do manage your life when you're a triple amputee? Asked Retired Army Staff Sergeant Shilo Harris, who was burned seven years ago today in a 700 pound IED attack in Iraq.
In 2011, Harris received his home in the San Antonio-area as a part of a partnership between Helping a Hero and ABC's now defunct show, Extreme Makeover Home Edition. It features special heating and cooling options necessary for him to manage his burn injuries.
"That's what this home does. It helps these men and women put their lives back on track with the injuries they've sustained," said Harris.
Nominations for the Aberdeen, NC home are due by March 31. Forms are available here at www.helpingahero.org.
