UNC campus put on alert after alleged assault

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.

Officials sent out a campus-wide alert to students, faculty and staff after some type of assault was reported at Hill Hall, which houses the Department of Music, around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Hours later, an "all clear" alert was sent out after UNC's Department of Public Safety had taken a man into custody.

Campus police say a student was in the basement of the building practicing when a 52-year-old man came in, grabbed her and pushed her inside a room. The student was able to get out and flee from her attacker.

Officials say Rickie White, who is homeless, was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges.

Although the student was not injured, the incident does have some people on campus concerned.

"It's unfortunate but people are crazy. People do stuff that we can't predict. And we just try to and hope for the best," UNC student Bailey Pennington said.

"Those things are kind of scary, especially in light of the situation that happened on Sunday, I think it was, with the man with the knife," UNC junior Rosalie Rubio said.

On Sunday, UNC's campus was put on lockdown after a knife-wielding man allegedly threatened some students. Jesse Kister, who is a former student at the university, was taken into custody on several charges and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
