Ahmad Daniels was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
Detectives are now investigating the case as a murder.
The child was shot Friday around 3:30 a.m. when someone fired several gunshots into his family's home on Peele Street in the Shaw Heights community. A stray bullet pierced the wall of his bedroom as he slept.
Daniels was taken by ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in critical condition.
He never regained consciousness.
He was home with an aunt, grandfather and four other children at the time of the shooting.
