Duke student organizes Nepal fundraiser
A Duke student has organized an online fundraisers for victims of Nepal's devastating earthquake

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Pratisksha Sharma is a Duke University student from Nepal who helped organized an online fundraiser to her help family and friends back home.

Sharma and others set a goal of $30,000, and they are very close to raising that amount.

On Friday evening, Sharma was among a large gathering of her peers who stepped up to assist and support.

"Students from NC State, UNC, and Duke came together in praying for the souls of the departed, and then in praying that people who are injured will get through," she told ABC11 Saturday morning.

She says no one from her family in Nepal was killed by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, but as the nation tries to dig out and rebuild, there's a great need for specific supplies.

"(We need) water purification and tents, and blankets and medicines to people in the rural areas. We want to reach out to areas where aid hasn't reached so far," said Sharma. "We are very grateful and we assure you, the money will be used properly"
