Durham County Sheriff's Office advises drivers to stay safe following winter storm
The Durham County Sheriff's Office said it continued to respond to weather-related calls a day after a winter storm swept through the Triangle.
The sheriff's office said deputies responded to more than two dozen crashes and helped the NC State Highway Patrol along with other neighboring agencies with more.
"I'm pleased that so many people heeded the advice of law enforcement and the Department of Transportation by staying home and off the roads during the bulk of the storm" said Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead. "As I travelled throughout Durham County this morning, I was pleased to see the great work of our Public Works and NCDOT crews on main thoroughfares, however many secondary roads remain impassable and it will take time and warmer temperatures to clear those areas."
The sheriff's office said more than a dozen additional calls were for drivers who became stranded or for abandoned vehicles.
Birkhead is advising drivers to take precautions if they plan to travel on the roads on Friday.
"Drive well below the posted speed limit, increase your following distance, and avoid breaking suddenly if possible," Birkhead said.
