House fire kills one person
The fire broke out in Carrboro on Smith Level Road

CARRBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- Fire officials said one person died as a result of a massive house fire in Carrboro late Friday night.

Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of Smith Level Road around 10:40 p.m. Multiple emergency crews responded, including Chapel Hill Fire Department, North Chatham Fire Department, and others.

When crews arrived, they reported the home was fully involved with smoke and visible flames. Officials said they fought the blaze aggressively, but the house was a complete loss.

Authorities said one person was killed in the fire. Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Smith Level Road house is registered to an 83-year-old Chapel Hill woman, but the identity of the person killed in the fire has not yet been confirmed.

The fire is still under investigation. According to fire officials, the house did not have residential fire sprinklers.
