Officers responded around 12:50 a.m. to a report of shots fired.
Homes were damaged in Durham, Fuquay Varina, and in Southern Pines, where a 138-year-old building was destroyed.
Public safety officials said someone intentionally cut fiber-optic lines, causing the outage and potentially disrupting 9-1-1 service.
Southern Pines police say a window was cracked, but the temperature inside the car was 114 degrees.
