Moore County residents return to devastation
VASS, N.C. (WTVD) -- Officials in Moore County lifted the mandatory evacuation for people living near the Woodlake Dam Sunday, allowing people to return to their homes. Some do not have much to go back to.
The Rogers family in Vass nearly lost everything in the flooding from Hurricane Matthew. Their house is inhabitable.
"This was our forever home. Our kids were supposed to grow up in this house. And my kids saw this house for the last time on Saturday. I will not allow them back out here," said Susan Rogers.
The items inside the rooms and their kids' bedrooms are destroyed.
Susan and Chad Rogers have found another house and will be paying rent and a mortgage until it's figured out. But they, and many other residents, believe this could have been avoided. And Susan has something to say to the owner of nearby Woodlake Dam.
"My message for her probably cannot be put on air. She owes us answers as to why that dam has not been fixed. And I am going to demand the answers," said Susan.
And to make matters worse, Moore County has not received a natural disaster declaration by FEMA.
"Well tell them to come to my house and look. And tell me that's not a natural disaster," said Chad.
FEMA officials will be in Moore County on Tuesday to make their assessments.
