FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD)

Omar Ramone Vereen, 17, of 5847 Holland Street, is charged with attempted first degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Accessory charges against 17-year old Kenneth Michael Burch of 5833 Holland Street have been removed.

Vereen was originally charged with assault with a dead weapon with intent to inflict serious injury. Investigators say the suspect shot 21-year old Jamel Rasheem Caughman of 1009 Greenhouse Drive in the face with a handgun while standing alongside a home in the Shaw Heights subdivision.

Deputies were called to 5847 Holland Street by a neighbor shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2008 after hearing gunfire.

Detectives say the shooting was the result of an argument between the victim and the suspect that spiraled out of control, resulting the shooting of Caughman.

Caughman was taken via ambulance to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where physicians treated him for a single gunshot wound to the right cheek. X-rays show the bullet exited behind Caughman's ear. He was treated and released a few hours later from the hospital.

Vereen is now being processed at the Cumberland County Detention Center. He is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a 100 thousand dollar secured bond.

A first court appearance is scheduled for Monday, January 14, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. in the courtroom area of the Detention Center.
