NC A&T State football player dies

GREENSBORO

Chad Edward Wiley, 22, collapsed a day earlier after voluntary morning drills on campus. Officials said he was immediately taken to the hospital after an athletic trainer stabilized him.

The Black Mountain native was a two-year starter on the offensive line.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported that Wiley had complained of dizziness after running drills outside but made his way to a training room before losing consciousness.

Wheeler Brown, the school's interim athletics director, said he did not know if Wiley ever regained consciousness, the News & Record reported.

"Anytime you lose a family member, it strikes at the core of what you are," Brown said. "Chad Wiley was an excellent young man and an excellent football player who served this university with great pride and distinction."

Tuesday's high temperature was 86 degrees, but the morning hours were cooler.
