There are fewer new students in Wake County schools than administrators were expecting.

School leaders released their 20-day numbers Tuesday.

There are 137,700 children in the classrooms. That's about 3,700 more than last year but fewer than expected.

The county projected enrollment to top 140,000. In 2006, the district increased by 6,900 students.

It grew by more than 7,000 last year.
