Hundreds of trees to honor slain teen

APEX The Robocats 4-H Club says, with the help of volunteers, they planted a total of 2350 trees in Jaycee Parks in Apex.

Organizers say thanks to a last minute order, 1000 more trees were added this morning, bringing the total for the day to 2,200.

The event kicked off at 9 a.m.

Members dedicated the event to Matthew Silliman. In a news release, the club called him "a friend and mentor, who loved the outdoors and was active in community service."

Silliman was found murdered in an empty home in the New Hill area of Wake County in December. Detectives have accused four former friends in his death. Aadil Shaaid Kahn, Allegra Rose Dahlquist, Drew Logan Shaw, and Ryan Patrick Hare could face life in prison if convicted.

Organizers of Saturday's planting say volunteers who register in advance got a Chick-fil-A lunch and a memorial t-shirt.
