Standoff ends in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE They say 24-year-old Specialist Jason Johnson barricaded himself in a building at the Chason Ridge Apartments on Scotia Lane. That's off of Skibo Road in the southwest part of the city.

Investigators say it began as some type of domestic dispute around 2 a.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived, they say Johnson tried to get away from them by climbing up into a second story apartment. He attempted to stab an officer as he was climbing, and then fired two shots from the apartment when he got there.

Officers returned fire, but nobody was injured.

Johnson is originally from Savannah, Georgia. He's a member of the 257th Dental Company of the 44th Medical Brigade. He's been posted at Fort Bragg for two years, but has never been deployed overseas. He is married with no children.

Police say this is the second time they've been involved in a standoff with him. The first time he gave himself up peacefully.

This time, officers tried to make contact with him by phone but were unsuccessful. So, they sent a bomb squad robot into the apartment and used its communication system to talk to Johnson. They say he was angry and told them he just wanted to be left alone.

After speaking with his mother by telephone, and hours of negotiations with officers, he finally gave himself up.

Witnesses say Johnson appeared calm. He was wearing camouflage pants and a dress shirt.
