ABC11 Eyewitness News has learned that officers on routine patrol had setup a license checkpoint when a man took off and started a chase.
Chief Eddie Jaggers chased the suspect down on foot down Highway 27.
Police say an altercation started and the chief was knocked out, but they aren't sure how.
Chief Jaggers was taken to WakeMed and is expected to be okay.
The suspect ran off, but was later caught by police just after 9 p.m.
Authorities have not released any other details about the incident at this time.
