Meeker asks for fence after Beltline death

RALEIGH

Meeker said the NC Department of Transportation has agreed to install a safety fence on the Outer Beltline between Six Forks Road and Glenwood Avenue where Carroll Lee Eames Jr. fell to his death while assisting a motorist on November 28.

Another man - Todd W. Fletcher - died in much the same way in October 2005, when he was assisting crash victims in the same area of the Beltline.

But Meeker says the DOT has declined to install fences at other locations across the state where the same type of accident is possible. The DOT says the chances of it happening are too rare.

But, Meeker says the DOT has agreed to split the cost with the city for fences at three other locations in Raleigh. They'll be installed at the I-440 bridge over Yadkin Road, the I-440 bridge over Raleigh Boulevard, and at the New Bern Avenue/US 64 business bridge over I-440.
