Police release ID of pedestrian killed

DURHAM

It happened around 8:27 p.m. when a car traveling southbound on Fayetteville Street near Burlington Avenue, hit 48-year-old Vickie Elaine Riley. Riley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver of the car, 21-year-old Brendan Duan Bass, lost control of his vehicle after hitting Riley and struck a SUV. Bass' car then jumped the curb struck a sign, went through a chain link fence and hit a parked car.

Neither Bass nor the driver of the SUV was seriously injured.

Bass was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving without a license, no insurance and using fictitious tags.

Bass also was arrested on an outstanding warrant charging him with robbery with a dangerous weapon. The robbery allegedly occurred March 30, 2009 on Alhambra Court. Bass was placed in Durham County Jail under a $280,000 bond.
