Fatal collision on Interstate 40

DURHAM

The interstate was not shut down, but it was reduced to two lanes of travel.

Police say a grey Mazda "Speed 3" and a red Chevrolet Corsica were involved in the crash.

The driver of the Corsica, 50-year-old David Sullivan Jr.of Cary, was killed.

Authorities say the Mazda attempted a lane change to the left and traveled into the path of the Chevy Corsica, sideswiping the Corsica in the right front quarter panel, forcing the Corsica to collide with the median guardrail.

The Corsica continued to travel up the guardrail and overturned, coming to rest on its roof. The driver of the Corsica died as a result of the collision.

The driver of the Mazda is 48-year-old Gifford Daniel Scott. Scott has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
