NC unemployment rate below 10 percent

RALEIGH

The Employment Security Commission released the unemployment rate for July on Friday - saying it stands at 9.8 percent.

"Job growth across all sectors continues to be a challenge," said ESC Chairman Lynn R. Holmes. "We experienced job growth in some sectors but had a large loss in government due mostly to declines in local school employment. We would like to see more consistent growth throughout all job sectors. "

The jobless rate has declined for five straight months. North Carolina's rate is still higher than the national jobless rate for June of 9.5 percent.

The last time North Carolina's unemployment rate was under 10 percent was January 2009, when it was 9.7 percent.
