School: Tryout where student died broke policies

GREENSBORO, N.C.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported that school officials say 20-year-old Jospin Milandu of Knightdale was participating in a voluntary, unscheduled track tryout for A&T when he died Aug. 16.

Milandu collapsed on the track and was taken to Moses Cone Hospital. The university says doctors determined he died from complications of an elevated heart rate.

The school said Tuesday that university policies were violated because the tryout didn’t appear on the school’s schedule of athletic events. Officials say one NCAA policy also was violated. The school did not explain the violation.

After Milandu's death, Director of Athletics Wheeler Brown said university policy states that all students trying out for a varsity sport must have a complete physical on file and sign a waiver to participate. Milandu was participating voluntarily in the unscheduled tryout.

Wheeler also said there was no trainer present during the tryout.
