Rickshaw drivers support accident victim

RALEIGH

According to the accident report, 39-year-old Brandis Chevelle Thomas was intoxicated and talking on her cell phone when she hit 37-year-old Justin Walker of Raleigh on New Bern Avenue near Dickens Drive around 4 a.m. November 15.

The accident report says Walker was thrown 110 feet after being struck by the Thomas' vehicle. He hit the car's windshield and then fell onto the road.

Police say Thomas kept going, then made a U-turn and returned to the accident scene.

Walker was taken to WakeMed where he remains in critical condition. Thomas was not hurt.

She was arrested and charged with driving while impaired and with felony serious injury by vehicle in the wreck.

Raleigh Rickshaw said Walker is a longtime rickshaw driver, and was on his bicycle heading to visit his wife in her hospital room at WakeMed when he was hit.

In order to help him, Raleigh Rickshaw is donating the use of its rickshaws to its rickshaw drivers to drive for free on Thursday so that they can donate all their proceeds in support of Walker and his family.
