Perdue declares Small Business Saturday in NC

RALEIGH Gov. Beverly Perdue has declared Saturday as "Small Business Saturday" in the state.

A statement from the state Department of Commerce says there were an estimated 734,000 small businesses in North Carolina in 2005. It says there were 182,950 employer businesses and 98 percent of those had fewer than 500 employees.

The department said businesses with fewer than 50 employees in 85 rural counties created 26,760 new jobs and added $2.3 billion to their payrolls between 1998 and 2002.
