Teacher resigns following hand taping incident

HARNETT COUNTY

Frank Gibson says the punishment doesn't fit the crime. He thinks what teacher Chandra January is accused of doing to his 5-year-old son is criminal.

The alleged incident happened at Boone Trail Elementary School last month. He says he was told his son picked up a stamp from the teacher's desk. When he put it back, January asked if the child knew what happens to people who steal. Gibson said his son replied, "'You go to jail.'"

Gibson says that's when the teacher used tape to bind the child's hands in front of the class.

The father says another student, who saw the incident, told another teacher what happened. That teacher reported the incident to the principal.

January was suspended while school officials investigated.

In published reports, Harnett County school officials say January resigned her teaching job Tuesday -- the same day school officials completed their investigation.

January lives in Lee County. ABC11 Eyewitness News went to her home but no one answered the door and she hasn't returned ABC11's phone calls.

Gibson hopes the incident is a reminder to all teachers that treating a student like a criminal is not a lesson they should teach.
