A fire left a Raleigh family of three without a home Sunday night.

The blaze broke out an apartment complex on Lake Ridge Drive off of Capital Boulevard.

Officials said the flames heavily damaged one unit and there were no reports of injuries.

No one was home when the blaze started.

"It started on the exterior of the apartment with a discarded cigarette," said Division Chief Gary Spane.

Fire crews said the Red Cross was not needed because the family had arranged for another place to stay.
