Raleigh rape suspect apprehended

RALEIGH

It happened just before midnight Saturday when the 21-year-old victim stopped at a store at the corner of Rock Quarry Road and Proctor Street.

She told investigators she was approached by a man asking for money as she was leaving the store. She told him 'no' and as she got in her car, he jumped in the passenger side.

The victim says he told her he had a gun and forced her to drive north on Rock Quarry Road. Police say the victim was forced to stop at a dark area where the suspect repeatedly raped her.

A day later, Raleigh police arrested 45-year-old Venable Stewart and charged him with the crimes. Stewart has a long criminal record. A prosecutor said he already has many charges against him including nine felony convictions and qualifies as a habitual felon.

Stewart's bond has been set at $460,000.
