It happened just after midnight on New Hope Road and Sue Ellen Drive, not far from Buffaloe Road.
Authorities said the driver, 38-year-old Enrico Torrance McLeod, lost control and struck a tree. He was the only person inside the 2003 Honda Pilot when it crashed.
McLeod was taken to WakeMed, where he later died. Officials have not said what caused him to lose control of the SUV.
Further details about the incident have not been released.
