The State Highway patrol said 3-year-old Barbara Anna Hunt darted into traffic near a home in the 1600-block of Spring Hill Church Road near Lillington.
The child's grandmother was watching her and had followed her outside but couldn't get to the little girl in time.
The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Troopers said the driver who hit the child was going under the speed limit when the accident happened.
So far, no charges have been filed.
