Vice President Joe Biden campaigns in Durham

Vice President Joe Biden spoke to a packed house at the Durham Armory Monday.

He told the audience of about 900 that voters have a "stark choice" between him and President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan.

"The differences couldn't be more clearly laid out," said Biden.

Biden said once voters make their choice in November, he hopes the country will get past the gridlock in Washington and move on.

He attacked Romney's economic proposals and said it's no different from the initiatives of the previous Bush administration.

"We've seen this movie before and we know how it ends," said Biden.

The Vice President said Romney wants to help the rich and would hurt the middle class with deregulation of Wall Street, cuts to education, and the continuation of policies that have sent jobs overseas.

Following his speech at the Armory, Biden made a somewhat unannounced visit to the Blue Coffee Café where he met with winners of the campaign's "Cup of Joe with Joe" contest.

The winners donated $3 or more to earn a chance to meet up with Biden somewhere on the campaign trail.

The people, who were from all around the country, learned they won last week. They arrived in the Triangle Sunday night.

Biden later stopped at a Hillsborough firehouse and greeted supporters.

Biden's visit to Durham came a day after Romney and his brand new running mate campaigned together in Mooresville, N.C. on Sunday.

Ryan also characterized the choice between the Republican and Democratic tickets as a stark choice between two competing visions of economic vitality.

He told an enthusiastic crowd of about a thousand "the contrast could not be more clear."

"I am so happy! I am so happy to have my teammate now," Romney told cheering supporters.

The Romney campaign said the Obama/Biden administration has had its chance to fix the economy and has failed.
