NC State Fair opens to the public today!

RALEIGH

Officials have addressed several safety concerns after illness hit the fairgrounds last year.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry will talk about safety at the State Fair Thursday. Also participating are Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison and representatives of Powers Great American Midways and the American Red Cross.

Last year, a total of 27 people - adults and children - contracted E. coli after attending the fair. The illness was likely related to animal contact in the Kelley Building was where sheep, goats, and pigs were housed and competed in livestock shows during the fair.

To prevent a recurrence, state agriculture officials said earlier that people and livestock will be separated as much as possible. Food vendors have been relocated and hand-washing stations have nighttime lighting and more signs.

The will also be new deep fried delights for fairgoers to try and American Idol winner Scotty McCreery will hold a concert.

The fair opens Thursday and runs through Oct. 21.
