WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Wake County Public Schools released the first draft of its new school assignment proposal Tuesday.

The district is trying to keep up with massive population growth throughout the county.

Two new schools are opening up within the next two years in southern Wake County in the Fuquay-Varina area.

  • South Lakes Elementary opening in 2020
  • Willow Spring High School opening in 2021
  • The majority of the reassignment will affect those in the southern part of the county but there are some other changes.

Some students attending Wake Forest High School will be moved to Wakefield High School to reduce overcrowding and better use Wakefield while it isn't at fullest capacity.

Kristin Kara thought her nearly 5-year-old daughter would start kindergarten at Fuquay-Varina Elementary next year but found out that may not be the case.

When she typed in her address to see her assignment, the site said:

"Please register at the school and they will inform you if they are admitting students or assigning students to an overflow school."

"I thought that if you live close then you automatically go to the closest school. It would seem logical. That's what I thought," said Kara.

    Timeline:

Public information sessions will be held in October and November. Those dates and locations are TBA.

Draft 2 will be presented to the school bard for discussion on Nov. 5

There will be a public hearing Nov. 15.

Board votes on final plan on Dec. 3.
