Teen charged in deacon death denied bond

RALEIGH (WTVD)

Latrell Latham, 16, has been in jail without bond since his arrest. Police say he shot 74-year-old Richard Brown to death last October.

A judge denied the teen bail Friday.

Brown's widow, Evelyn Brown, spoke to Eyewitness News back in October, shortly after her husband was killed.

"Its such a waste," she said in response to her husband's death. "It's such a waste of a good person's life."

Richard Brown is remembered as a gentle deacon who loved his church. In addition to murder, Latham is also charged with robbery -- the likely motive in the deadly shooting.

"We know that there's a God who knows it all and sees it all," Evelyn said.

Now the court will decide how to handle Latham, and the grief is easy to see as Evelyn adjusts to life without Richard.

"Richard was the answer to the rest of my life," Evelyn said.

Latham's next court date is January 31.
