The incident happened off Old Lowery Road in Red Springs.
Several young children were playing in a dirt road inside a mobile home park with a man driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee stooped.
As the man starting to drive away, the children moved out of the way, he could not see the girl and ran over her.
Her parents drove the girl to a hospital, but on the way were stopped by a trooper for speeding. The trooper helped them get to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where girl pronounced dead.
The incident is still under investigation. Names are not being released at this time.
