"The entire university community is saddened by the passing of Mr. Pettaway and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time," said Chancellor Charlie Nelms in a statement sent out to the media.
There's no indication of foul play, but police have not given a cause of death. The body is now at the medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.
NCCU says counseling staff is providing grief counseling to any student, faculty or staff member who desires assistance.
