Group prays for James Johnson

WILSON The NAACP organized the event at the Rountree Missionary Baptist Church.

Johnson was charged with the June 2004 death of Brittany Willis --a 17-year-old who was raped and murdered just days after her high school graduation.

He spent three years in jail for the crime. In 2007, Johnson was freed after the NAACP held a series of rallies to draw attention to his case. Investigators took another look, and the murder charges against him were dropped.

Johnson eventually turned in another man, Kenneth Meeks, who is now serving a life sentence for the murder.

However, Johnson is still charged with accessory after the fact. Police say he helped Meeks cover up the crime.

According to the Wilson Daily Times, jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday for Johnson's trial.
