Deputies: Principal assaulted student

WENDELL Allison Baker, 41, must appear in court to answer the misdemeanor accusation.

Wake County schools officials have declined to explain what happened, citing personnel policies.

But the child's mother - Terri Byrd - says Baker slapped her autistic daughter across the face.

"I wanted to slap her. I wanted to slap her," said Byrd. "Disability, or no disability, you are not in the school system to slap children."

Eight-year-old Kylie has a severe disability and can only say a few words. Her mom admits she can get physical at times, but says it's no excuse for abuse.

"When a hand goes across the face, that's a slap. That's not discipline to me," she said.

Baker resigned in June after she was suspended with pay for "negative interaction with a student." Wake County Schools says she had no prior complaints against her since she was hired in 2002.
