Sen. Soles indicted for shooting

RALEIGH

Soles turned himself in Friday. He and his attorney arrived at the Columbus County Jail for processing.

A jail official said Soles was held until he posted a $5,000 unsecured bond.

A grand jury on Thursday indicted state Sen. R.C. Soles on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Authorities have said the Columbus County Democrat shot Thomas Kyle Blackburn after two intruders kicked in the front door of the lawmaker's secluded Tabor City home. Blackburn wasn't badly hurt.

Attorney Joe Cheshire has said Soles fired in self defense. Cheshire did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Soles said last week he won't seek re-election this year to the General Assembly, where he was first elected in 1968.
