Teen hit on Raleigh street

RALEIGH

Witnesses said 19-year-old Rayshawn Lee Cooper was hit by a white van just after 9 a.m.

According to Raleigh police at the scene, the teenager stopped a southbound CAT bus asking how to get to Triangle Town Center.

The driver told him he had to catch a northbound bus on the other side of the road. Numerous eyewitnesses said the teenager then walked in front of the stopped southbound bus and was struck by the passing van.

"I seen a young man run right out - right out in front of the bus. [He] just didn't look at all. The van hit him. He went about 20-30 feet into the air. Landed just on the other side of my van over there," said witness Gene Scarboro.

Cooper was taken to WakeMed, where he was listed in critical condition. The driver of the van was so upset by what happened that EMS took him to the hospital too because he appeared to be hyperventilating.

Traffic was backed up for miles on US 1/Hwy 401 southbound while police investigated. The road reopened just before 11 a.m.
