IBM develops game to solve city problems

RALEIGH

Called 'cityone,' the creation is billed as the world's first smarter planet interactive game.

It's designed to make cities and industries smarter by solving business, environmental, and logistical problems.

"It's not your typical game," explained developer Phaedra Boinodiris.

Boinodiris and the rest of the team that developed cityone say the game is a simple way to explain complex systems that make up a growing city. With cities today consuming an estimated 75 percent of the world's energy while emitting more than 80 percent of the greenhouse gases, there are many real world challenges.

"We crammed the game in with all kinds of real life scenarios," said Boinodiris.

And City One can be applied to real cities like Raleigh. For instance, it's designed to help business and city leaders solve real problems.

"For example, you might have a municipality in the game that's having rolling brown outs," Boinodiris explained. "What are the different kinds of infrastructures I can put in place? What do I need to do if I've got a city a utility that's dealing with this?"

cityone has been described as being like the popular game SimCity, but the solutions are real.

"It gives you immediate feedback. How did it affect your water quality, your carbon footprint, how did it affect your profitability your customer satisfaction," said Boinodiris.
