Raleigh police spokesperson Jim Sughrue identified the victim as 41-year-old Richard Christopher Maher after his family had been notified.
Police did not immediately have a description of the vehicle that hit Maher, but the investigation was in its early stages.
Sughrue said Maher was walking in the southbound lanes of Capital near I-440 around 3:45 a.m. when he was struck.
Anyone who witnessed the accident or who can help identify the hit-and-run driver is asked to contact Raleigh CrimeStoppers at (919) 834-HELP.
