Soldier detained after shooting at Pope AFB

POPE AIR FORCE BASE, NC

A news release from Pope Air Force Base said a single gunshot was fired inside one of the base residences during a domestic incident around 8:45 p.m. There were no injuries reported.

The shooter, Spc. Ronald Gartrell who is assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, left the scene, but was later detained by Fort Bragg authorities.

The North Carolina base had been on lockdown while authorities searched for the 24-year-old.

Gartrell, whose hometown was not immediately available, has been charged with attempted murder.

Further details about the incident have not been released.

Pope Air Force Base is near the Army's Fort Bragg outside of Fayetteville.
